The name Sumoll comes from the word “sumollar” (to ripen) that is used in a dialect of Catalan. It’s also known as Sumoll negre, Piñuela or Sunnites. It’s a type of red grape but there’s also a white subvariety.
Its seed is big and lengthened. The bunch is medium-sized or big, compact and closed and it has medium-sized, spherical and bluish maroon grapes. It’s a rural variety, resistant to drought and with an even development. It buds early and it makes it sensitive to spring frosts, mites and oidium.
Josep Pla said that “In Baix Penedès, the Sumoll produces high-proof red wines”. Sumoll wine is rough and it has a dark colour, a good acidity and an aroma of blue flowers and plants, due to its high concentration of malic acid. This variety produces rosé wines, young red wines, crianzas and rosé cavas.
The Sumoll is a native variety from Penedès that nowadays have less than 100 hectares planted. We also find the Sumoll in DO Cataluña, DO Pla de Bages and DO Tarragona.
