The name Tempranillo is the diminutive of the Spanish temprano (early), a reference to its early ripening, because it’s harvested at the end of September. In Catalan it’s called Ull de Llebre (eye of hare) because of the rounded shape of the grape. It’s a variety of red grape with a thick skin, a long and compact bunch of grapes and a medium-sized blue-black fruit.
The Tempranillo is a very delicate variety and it needs a cool climate. It resists the spring frosts, pests and diseases, but it has little resistance to drought and wind.
Tempranillo wine is balanced, full-bodied, intense colouring and slightly acid. It ages well in wood. It’s commonly blended with Grenache, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This blend makes young red and rosé wines and also great crianza wines. The main bouquet is reminiscent of forest fruits but we also find plum, spices, vanilla and toast. Its colour is an intense red ruby.
It’s a variety originated in La Rioja and it’s cultivated in the DO Costers del Segre, DO Conca de Barberà and DO Penedès, where it has a great tradition.
