The Xarel·lo is a variety from Penedès and Camp de Tarragona, used to produce cava along with Macabeu and Parellada. It’s a white grape variety and it’s balanced, silky and tasty.
The grape is small and compact, with a medium-sized, spherical and sweet seed. The amber yellow bunches are medium-sized and spherical. It’s characterized by its fresh and fruity aroma, which reminds of apple and lemon.
The Xarel·lo produces balanced, silky and acid wines, with fresh and fruity aromas. It’s the basis of most of the blends in cava because of its freshness and aromatic smoothness, and it gives them acidity, structure and body.
The name of Xarel·lo comes from the Italian “chiarello” (pale). In Alella, it’s called Pansa blanca and Cartoixà in Priorat. In Mallorca they call it Palop, Planta valenciana and Planta bona.
We can find the Xarel·lo in DO Alella, DO Binissalem, DO Costers del Segre, DO Penedés and DO Tarragona, where it’s one of the main varieties of white wine. It can be found almost all over Catalonia and Mallorca.
