Designation of Origin
Its Regulatory Board was constituted in 1960 and it was the creation of the Designation Origin Penedès. It was created to value its wine and offers a quality brand. At present, it includes 5.700 vine growers, 270 production cellars and 148 bottling cellars. A year production is calculate on 1,5 and 2 million hectolitres of wine.
This DO has special grape varieties because this DO brand, like the others, only can produce with some specific grapes. For producing white wines: “Xarel·lo”, “Macabeu”, “Parellada” which are tradition and new ones: “Chardonnay”, “Riesling”, “Gewüstraminer”, “Chenin Blanc” and “Moscatell d'Alexandria”. For red wines: “Garnatxa”, “Carinyena”, “Pinot Noir” which are traditional, and new ones: “Merlot”, “Ull de llebre”, “Monestrell”, “Cabernet Sauvignon” and “Syrah”.
Wines
Most wines from Penedès are young, aromatic, fine and fresh. There are also ageing wines, both white and red. Specially worth mentioning are the semi-sparkling wines resulting from a short fermentation, which stand out because of their lightness.
Penedès Designation of Origin produces light white wines, fresh, fruity and aromatic, with moderate alcohol content.Red wines are mild and velvety, complex and elegant.
Geographical Situation
El Penedès gives its name to 27,000 ha of vineyards growing in between Barcelona and Tarragona. The climate, influenced by the Mediterranean sea, is very varied and provides Penedès with privileged conditions that allow the production of a large variety of great finesse and quality wines.
Ageing
Ageing will last at least six months for whites, rosés and semi-sparkling; and fifteen months for red wines, with a first phase in oak container, complemented afterwards with another phase in bottle.
