The commercialization of food products through the Net is an upward trend. Wine is one of the most popular products in this new sales channel.
In Spain, traditional sales channels are still an important part of the distribution of food products. However, some products like wine, olive oil, cheese and cured Iberian ham are more and more sold on the Internet.
Even in the current situation of crisis, the sales from this new channel are growing while the consumption at bars and restaurants is being reduced, because people can obtain the products at lower prices. But there are other reasons that explain this increase, like the comfort of buying at home or the possibility of having more information about the product than in some shops.
According to a French study done by Vente-privee, the 79% of the consumers of wine in Spain also buy wine on the Internet. This is a higher percentage than in Germany (51%) or France (44%). The study also indicates that preferences don’t change on the Net; red wine is still the most consumed wine in Europe, as much on the online sales as on the traditional sales channels.
Undoubtedly, the possibilities of the Internet for the commercialization are immense. Spain is still far from the USA statistics, because in 2012 their online sales of wine exceeded their export volume, but Spain is already the 4th country in Europe with the biggest turnover from the e-commerce.
