Costers del Segre

Designation of Origin

Its Regulatory Board was consittuted in 1986. At present, it includes 773 vine growers, 12 production cellars and 12 bottling cellars. On the whole it is a cultivated land of 3,891.4255 Ha.

Raimat, a little extension but great quality, is located to the West of the city of Lérida, near the border with Huesca. Located in one of the most developed agricultural areas of the country, the land has a mild topography.

Its tradition spans for three quarters of a century and it comprises more than 1,500 ha of vineyard, with choice varieties very perfectly grown by means of careful methods of production. Its production includes very fine and delicate white wines as well as red wines with a good balance and an elegant, complex structure; and sparkling wines of great character and rich in shades.

Geographical Situation

Raimat, Artesa, Vall de Ríu Corb and Les Garrigues are the four subareas from Lérida province included in the Designation of Origin Costers del Segre.

Artesa subarea is located North-West of the capital, in a very rough land crossed by Segre River from East to West. This wine making region has a very extreme climate: winters are specially hard and long, which forces to grow short-cycle varieties —Macabeo, Monastrelll and Cabernet Sauvignon. Production includes white, red and rosé wines.

The subareas of Vall de Ríu Corb and Les Garrigues are located in the South-East of the province. They border each other, and both of them border Tarragona province. They belong to the Ebro depression. Lands are dry, arid and have lots of sunshine that provides the vineyard with an excelent ripening and good health. Production includes white and red wines, sound and vigorous, with an important alcohol content.
